November 10th, 2010 ASHE SNJ Dinner Meeting
GPS Shoulder Widening:

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is advancing one of the most ambitious safety improvement projects in the State. The purpose of this 16 mile long corridor project is to improve travel safety for the thousands of customers who use the Garden State Parkway corridor daily. Safety studies focused on serious crashes and fatalities and the proposed improvements which can save lives. Detailed studies revealed that fatalities occur during roadway departure crashes in remote areas, well away from crash hot spots at interchanges and toll plazas. The Authority is now working with the consultant community to finalize the design and implement these critical safety improvements.

October 20th, 2010 ASHE SNJ Dinner Meeting
I-295/I-76/Route 42 Interchange Project:

The meeting was held at the Cranbury Inn in Cranbury, NJ. The first program of the evening was given by recent graduates of Rowan Engineering. They presented a mock engineering plan which was very well received by the group.

The second program was a presentation by Craig Johnson (Vice-President) and Bryan Garbasz (Sr. Structural Engineer). The presentation was on the Rt. 295 Direct Connect. This is a major carrier of Philadelphia commuter traffic via the Walt Whitman Bridge and a connection to the southern New Jersey shore via Route 42 and the Atlantic City Expressway, the interchange is the busiest in the region. High volumes of traffic, low main design speed, the complex configuration of the interchange and the weaving movements combine to cause a high incidence of motor vehicle accidents. The purpose of this project is to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion at the interchange of I-295, I-76 and Route 42 while providing a direct connection for the I-295 through traffic. The existing interchange requires motorists to reduce speed in both directions of I-295 so that they can safely negotiate ramps with 35 mph speed limits.
